Program Requirements, Policies and Registration

Notice: The following are typical program requirements and policies.  The program coordinator may modify this information without prior notice (usually in a direct email to registered applicants).  It is also the responsibility of the student to follow-up on current times, dates and class locations issued by the program coordinator that may not agree with information posted on other general lists or calendars within this site. Please contact the coordinator if you have questions or need clarification about any detail posted here.

Core Courses: 6 courses: Basic Botany, Basic Ecology, Basic Horticulture, Plant Identification, Tree Identification, and Landscaping with Native Plants.

Electives: 4 additional courses (hours vary) chosen from among various offerings.

Prerequisites: Basic Botany is required for all other classes, and therefore, will be the first course taken by anyone pursuing the certificate. Some courses have other prerequisites—see individual course descriptions for requirements.

Participants who have taken and completed college level work in a similar course MAY, with permission of the program director, exempt that course, except for Basic Botany. No more than 2 courses will be exempted.

Location: Most courses will be held at the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, McMillan Greenhouse. A few classes will be taught at other local sites, so it is important to check the current listing for each course in the schedule provided by the program coordinator.

Cost: $9 per contact hour. Occasionally, there may be a supplemental cost for transportation on a non-local field trip or for special materials/supplies.

Registration and payment: registration applications will be processed in a first-emailed or first-served basis. Payment is expected within one week following confirmation that you are pre-registered. If payment is not received within this time, your place will be given to the next applicant on our waiting list.

There is no limit to the number of courses one may register for, but full payment is expected to hold all of your registrations.  Make checks payable to “UNCC Botanical Gardens” with the class(es) name(s) noted in the memo line. Send payments to the attention of the program coordinator at the address listed below. Please do not send payment until you have received confirmation that you are pre-registered.

Cancellations/Refund Policy: Once a payment is deposited we are not able to issue a refund. If you must withdraw from a course before it begins, we will offer you credit towards future courses for the amount you paid for the withdrawn course, providing you withdraw no later than 14 days prior to the beginning of the course. Otherwise, we will deduct a 20% cancellation fee, with the remainder being applied as credit towards future courses. Your credit does not have a time-limit.  Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to the starting time will receive NO CREDIT.

Re-taking a class: if you feel like you need a refresher, miss a significant number or class sessions or want to repeat a course taught by a different instructor, then consider re-taking a class.  The course fee may be 50% off (excluding materials/supplies).
