Winter Walk, and more…

Every week, I tally the number of visitors walking through the Gardens. Numbers vary of course, but we are in the quietest time of the year which, in some ways, make it the best time of the year. On a warmish winter day, you can sit quietly on a bench in the middle of the Glen with few distractions and no mosquitoes. You may think that the plants aren’t doing anything, but that would be the furthest thing from the truth. Winter isn’t the garden’s peak bloom season, but there are many flowers popping, many of them fragrant. Personally, I love paper bush and Daphne, both of which have swollen buds right now. If you’re interested in winter plants, then I recommend you join us for our winter walk on February 11. It’s going to be a great time, and for those of you who also love orchids, we’ll be having our annual orchid sale at the same time! Members can attend the Winter Walk for free, and non-members get in for $5. Orchids at the sale will range from less than $10 to about $50 to fit everyone’s budget!

Job of a Lifetime!

We said goodbye to our Associate Director Paula Gross when she retired last month. We know
that we will never be able to replace her, but we are excited to announce that we are looking for a new Assistant Director. We’re looking for someone who loves both plants and people and who values education. Someone who is aggressive with new ideas and big dreams. If you or someone that you know has these qualities and is interested in this kind of position please check out the job description here

Featured Plant of the Month

Daphne

I have a short list of plants that I could just sit and smell all day, and Daphne is at the top of that list. This Sunday we will definitely be seeing, and smelling, some Daphne! Its one weakness is that it is short lived in a garden, usually only lasting a few years, but it is so amazing that most people don’t mind replanting every once in awhile.
