Winter Walk and Special Presentation on Dwarf Conifers

Lenten Rose in Bloom in the Susie Harwood Garden (Winter 2013)

Lenten Rose in Bloom in the Susie Harwood Garden

Sunday, February 15, 2015  1pm & 2 pm

Join staff of the Botanical Gardens for an informative stroll through the delights of the Susie Harwood Garden.  There is so much to appreciate in a southern garden in winter – bright berries, bark textures, evergreen structures, and magically fragrant flowers.

Begin your tour with a special presentation on dwarf conifers by Bruce Appeldoorn, owner of Appeldoorn Landscape Nursery in Bostic, NC near Shelby.  Bruce will have a selection of choice and hard-to-find dwarf conifers suitable for the Charlotte region for sale at the McMillan Greenhouse.  The Charlotte Camellia Society will also be on-site with a wonderful selection of winter-blooming Camellias for sale, including some favorites you will see in the garden.  Come celebrate the “fourth season” of life in the garden!

Guided tours of the winter garden and conifer presentations begin at 1pm & 2pm.
Admission for tours and presentations: $5 per adult (free for members-you may join at the door).

Sale and Greenhouse Hours: Thursday & Friday, 9 am – 4 pm. Saturday, 10am – 3pm.

Don’t miss our annual Valentine’s Sale.  Orchids are fascinating flowers and make for a unique treat for a special person in your life (maybe that special person is you!)  Come shop from our choice selection of blooming plants, including mini-cattleyas, oncidiums, and pansy-face orchids.  They are much more beautiful than they sound!   We’re here to help you choose and to explain their care so you can keep them looking good – either for years to come or to enjoy for a season (they last much longer than a bouquet of roses!)  Orchids will be priced from $15 to $40.  Cash, checks, and credit cards accepted.

This is a great excuse to get out of the office and enjoy a tour through the McMillan Greenhouse to soak in the warmth and fragrance of our orchid and other plant collections, too!
