We offer guided tours of the greenhouse &/or outdoor gardens by appointment. If you are interested in bringing a group for a guided tour please read the guidelines and details below.  If your group fits these guidelines and you would like to schedule a visit, please fill out a tour request form.

Group size: minimum of 7, maximum of 26
Fee per participant: $3
*Note: Group tours for children require 1 adult chaperone (no charge) per every 12 children.  Additional adults may join the tour ($3 each). Accompanying toddlers under 3 years of age, no charge.
Scheduling: Please submit your request at least 1 week in advance. A guide will contact you by email or phone, within 48 hours.
Days & Times: Guided tours are scheduled on weekday mornings.
Parking restrictions:  We have very limited parking adjacent to the greenhouse and gardens. Traveling in a 15-25 passenger bus is ideal.  Carpooling is recommended otherwise, as there are only 6 visitor spaces near the greenhouse.  Visitor decks (5 minute walk to greenhouse) are an option if a bus or carpooling is not possible.  See parking and directions page.

More Information . . .

What does a guided tour consist of? Guided tours generally focus on the greenhouse and the diversity of plants in our collections – orchids, carnivorous plants, tropical fruit and spice plants, desert plants, and unusual tropical plants.  However, a guided tour can be tailored to your group’s particular interests or depending on seasonal highlights – just ask in advance.   Tours generally last between 45 minutes – 1 hour, but can extend to 1.5 hours, if requested.
Tours for school children, in addition to the “diversity of the greenhouse collections” focus described above, are “plant habitats and adaptations” or “flowers and pollinators”.  Children’s tours can be tailored to last between 45 minutes up to 1.5 hours.

Can our group visit without a guided tour? If your group size is 15 or fewer, you may visit without a guide.  However, for most types of groups, a guide is a great enhancement to your visit.  Unfortunately, parking and greenhouse size do not allow for large group visits.
If your unguided group is larger than 15, we recommend visiting Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont (30 minutes away).  For larger children’s groups seeking low-cost nature outings, we recommend the excellent Mecklenburg county parks system, Reedy Creek Park is just 15 minutes away.
